가회동 31번지의 한옥밀집지구의 중앙부분에 위치하고 있다. 전통적인 가로경관이 잘 남아있는 가회동 31번지 길에 면하여 가장 중요한 지점에 입지하고 있으며, 길에 면한 화방벽 등 한옥 보존상태도 양호하다. ㄱ자형 안채와 일자형 사랑채가 ㄷ자형을 이루고, 사랑채의 남쪽으로 방 한 칸이 덧붙여져 있다. ㄷ자형 몸체로 한정된 안마당과 ㄱ자형을 이루는 작은 사랑마당이 분화되어있고, 각각 문간과 쪽문으로 출입할 수 있도록 되어 있다.
1997년 현재의 집주인이 이사를 하면서 수선하였다. 안채에서 안방과 부엌의 위치를 맞바꾸어 재구성하였다. 안방 자리에 화장실과 식당을 두고, 식당을 중심으로 안방과 대청과 연결되도록 하였다. 사랑채 뒤편으로 화장실을 덧붙였다. 사랑채는 사랑대청이었던 자리를 방과 부엌으로 변경하여 세를 놓았다. 한옥의 전통적인 구성과 아름다움을 잃지 않으면서, 현대적인 생활을 수용한 좋은 예로 꼽을 수 있다.
Kahoi-dong No.31-32 is located in the central part of Kahoi-dong No. 31, a Hanok- concentrated area. It is situated in the most important location as it faces the Kahoi- dong No. 31 Street where traditional street views are preserved very well. The quality of preservation is excellent, including the fire prevention wall along the street. A ‘ㄷ-digeut’ shape is formed by a’ㄱ-giyeok’ shaped inner quarters (an-chae) and a linear outer quarters (sarang-chae). In addition, there is a one kan (1.8m2) room to the south of the outer quarters. There are two divided courtyards ie a limited inner courtyard due to the ‘ㄷ- digeut’ shaped building and a small outer courtyard of a ‘ㄱ-giyeok’ shape. They both have a separate entrance.
This Hanok was refurbished in 1997 when the current owner moved in. In the inner quarters, the position of the an-bang (the main bedroom) and the kitchen have been switched and they have also been restructured. On the an-bang site, a bathroom and dining room were constructed and, from the dining room, the an-bang and dae-cheong (the wooden-floored main hall) are all connected. Behind the sarang-chae (the outer quarters), a bathroom has been added. In the outer quarters, the sarang dae-cheong (the outer quarters’ wooden-floored hall) site has been converted to a room and a kitchen for letting. This is a very good example of adapting a Hanok to the modern lifestyle whilst not losing the traditional structure and beauty of the Hanok.
