가회동 31번지 한옥밀집지역의 북쪽 긑에 위치하였다. 전통적인 가로경관이 잘 남아있는 가회동 31번지 골목의 북쪽 모서리에 입지하고 있다. ㄷ자형의 한옥으로, 남쪽으로 마당이 열려있다. ㄷ자형 몸체에 덧붙여 대문이 있다. 대문을 들어서서 계단을 올라 마당에 오르면 조망이 매우 좋다. 한옥의 내부 평면은 많이 변형되었다.
원래 한옥은 ㄱ자형 안채와 일자형 문간채가 조합된 평면인데, 2000년 여름 수선공사를 통하여 많은 부분이 변형되었다. 문간채에 있던 문간을 없애고, 그 자리에 방으로 새로 들였다. 건넌방을 부엌 및 식당으로 바꾸고, 식당을 통하여 이 방으로 출입할 수 있도록 하였다. 대문은 문간채 날개 아래쪽에 새로 만들었다. ㄱ자형 안채는 안마당 쪽으로 처마선까지 반칸 증축하였다. 결과적으로 두 칸 깊이가 된 대청을 앞뒤로 나누어 앞쪽은 거실을 뒤쪽은 차를 마시는 선방을 만들었다. 서쪽 날개에 있던 부엌은 방으로, 그 아래 건넌방은 화장실로 개조하였다. 그리고 앞으로 반칸 증축하여 툇마루를 만들었다. 전통차를 연구하고 시음하는 ‘다원’ 용도의 개방형 한옥으로 일반에게 개방될 예정이다.
Kahoi-dong No. 31-39 is on the north end of Kahoi-dong No.31 which is a Hanok concentrated area. It stands on the northern corner of Kahoi-dong No. 31 which retains a good traditional street view. It is a ‘ㄷ-digeut’ shaped Hanok in which the inner courtyard opens up to its south. The top right end of the ㄷ- digeut has been extended to install the main gate. Upon entering the main gate, steps lead to the inner courtyard which provides a very fine view. The Hanok interior floor plan has been changed greatly.
The original Hanok was made up of a ‘ㄱ-giyeok’ shaped inner quarters and a linear middle quarters. However, during its renovation in the summer of 2000, many parts of the Hanok were changed. The porch area was removed and made into a room. This room can be entered and exited through the dining area and the kitchen which were installed by converting the second bedroom. The main gate has been newly constructed at the lower end of the western wing on the site of the previous porch area. The ‘ㄱ-giyeok’ shaped inner quarters are extended a half Kan (0.9m) to the line of eaves toward the inner courtyard. As a result, the depth of Dae cheong (the main wooden floored reception area) has increased to two Kan (3.6m). This is divided into two areas, the front as a reception and the back as the area for meditation and drinking tea. The kitchen on the western wing has been renovated and converted into a room and the second room in the middle quarters has been transformed into a bathroom. In addition to the renovation, by extending a half Kan (0.9m) towards the inner courtyard, a long narrow wooden floor has been fitted along the renovated area. This open-style Hanok plans to open to the public as ‘Dawon – Origin of Tea’ for the public for tea tasting and studying about traditional tea.
