가회동 31번지의 한옥밀집지구의 북쪽 경계부분에 위치하고 있다. 이 31번지 도시한옥주거지는 원래는 한 필지였던 구릉지대로, 1930년대에 개발된 지역이다. 1929년 지적도를 보면 31번지 필지의 경계는 가회동과 삼청동이 구분되는 동 경계이며, 지형적으로도 능선부분에 해당된다. 이 가회동 31-90필지의 북쪽 경계선과 축대를 통해 개발 전 땅의 형태를 유추할 수 있다.
한옥평면은 일자형 몸체 날개를 기본으로, 남쪽으로 양 날개가 한 칸씩 돌출되고 북쪽으로도 대지 형상에 따라 돌출되어 변형된 공(工)자형을 이루고 있다. 일자형 몸체에 배열된 안방과 대청, 건넌방들은 전면의 툇간으로 연결되었으며, 남서쪽 모서리의 날개 부분의 누마루는 몸체보다 레벨을 높여서 사랑마루로서의 형태를 갖추었다. 현재 서재로 사용되는 방에 부엌을 두는 대신, 웃방 자리에서 북쪽으로 꺾인 날개에 부엌을 배치하였다. 그럼으로써 한옥 전체가 남쪽 햇볕을 잘 받을 수 있도록 하면서, 기능적으로도 편리한 평면을 이루고 있다. 한옥의 보존 상태가 좋으며, 마당에서 바라보는 전망이 훌륭하다.
Kahoi-dong No. 31-90 is located in the northern boundary area of Kahoi-dong No. 31, a Hanok-concentrated area. No.31 Hanok residential area was originally a hill which was developed in the 1930s. According to the 1929 land registry map, the No.31 land boundary is where Kahoi-dong and Samcheong-dong are divided at the eastern boundary and, topographically, at the point where the hill begins to rise. The landscape before the land development can be estimated by following the northern boundary of the Kahoi-dong No. 31-90 lot and the stone terrace embankment.
The floor plan of the Hanok has a linear layout comprising the main body with both wings protruding to the south by one kan (1.8 M2) each. To the north, due to the topography, the wings also jut out on either side so the Hanok forms a twisted 工 shape. The an-bang (main bedroom) and dae-cheong (wooden-floored main hall) are situated along the main body of the Hanok. The gunneon-bangs (rooms across the dae-cheong from the an-bang) are linked to the rest of the house through the toit-gan (an extension built by adding extra beams) at the front of the house. The elevated wooden floor verandah of the south west corner wing has been raised higher than the main body of the Hanok and is used as the ma-ru (wooden- floor hall) for the outer quarters. Thus every part of the Hanok can not only enjoy good sunlight in the south but also benefit from a convenient floor plan. This Hanok has been preserved well and the view from the inner courtyard is excellent.
