Gunja-ri

Photos by David Kilburn

Gunja-ri has been home for the Gwangsan Kim family for over 600 years. The original village was destroyed when the government confiscated the land for the Andong Dam, around 1972. The family bought new land and moved as many of the buildings as they were able to the current site. Sadly many buildings could not be saved. The village is still home to the Kim family - the 19th and 20th generations live there. "Gunja-ri" means "village of gentlemen," a reference to the "Seven Gentlemen of Ocheon," members of the family who became distinguished Confucian scholars.
