This hanok has been owned by David & Jade Kilburn since 1988. It is also the hanok used by the Korean film director Kim Ki-Duk for the filming of his prize winning film Bin Jip ( Bin Jip translates as "Empty House" but the film's official English name is "3-Iron")
가회동 31번지의 한옥밀집지구의 서쪽 경계부분에 위치하고 있다. 남쪽으로 가회동 33번지, 서쪽으로 삼청동 35번지 도시한옥주거지가 연속되어있다. 모두 1930년대에 개발된 주거지로, 더불어 동질적인 경관을 이루고 있다. 현재 필지 경계선과 지형을 통하여 개발이전 1929년 당시의 필 경계선을 확인할 수 있다. 이 한옥은 골목길이 꺾어지는 지점에, 길보다 1.6M 높은 레벨 위에 위치하고 있다.
평면은 ㄱ자형 안채와 일자형 사랑채가 ㄷ자형을 이루고, 이를 기본으로 사랑채의 북쪽에 문간이 사랑채의 남쪽에 사랑마루가 덧붙여져 있다. 작은 대지이지만 안채와 사랑채의 영역이 구별되어있고, 별도의 대문으로 출입할 수 있다. 안채의 부엌이 있던 자리를 목욕실로 개조하였다. 마당에 면하여 80센티미터 정도의 난간이 있는 쪽마루를 붙여서 안채의 방들을 연결하고, 사랑채와도 연결되도록 하였다. 마당은 전통적인 석물과 화초로 아름답게 꾸며져 있다.
Kahoi-dong No. 31-79 is located on the western boundary of Kahoi-dong No. 31, the Hanok concentrated area. The Seoul Metropolitan city Hanok residential areas extend to Kahoi-dong No. 33 southwards and Samcheong-dong No. 35 westwards. All were developed circa 1930 and therefore have the same quality of appearance. By looking at the present land boundary and the topography, the land boundary in 1929, prior to the development, can be established. This Hanok is situated 1.6 metres higher than the road at the point where the alley bends.
The floor plan consists of a ‘ㄱ-giyeok’ shape inner quarters and a ‘ㄷ-digeut’ shape outer quarters. To this basic layout, a porch has been built on the north side of the inner quarters and a long, narrow wooden verandah built on the south. Even though it is a small plot, the inner quarters and outer quarters are distinct and each quarters has its own door for exit and entry. The place where the kitchen existed in the inner quarters has been converted into a bathroom. Towards the inner courtyard, a long narrow wooden floor, about 80cm wide, with guardrail has been built to link all the rooms in the inner quarters as well as to link with the outer quarters. The inner courtyard is beautifully adorned with ornate traditional stonework and flowers.
